One Shot “Chalk Emotions” Planning

For our One Shot video we all met up in the Waverley Building to discuss our ideas, I got there a little late and missed the discussion but by  the time I was there the group had decided to use Ollie’s idea.

The idea for the film was a young girl sitting on the ground chalking her life story into the ground. We all went home to do some sketches so we had some ideas of which the little girl could use and arranged to meet up the day after to finish our planning and record our film.

The day after we all met up in the library to discuss our ideas, only Sam had done some sketches but then we all done a few while we was together and got the idea we needed for our film. We then agreed to go get the equipment we needed and go film, Me and Becky was going to the works to buy the chalk and Ollie, Joe, Harry and Sam went to the Waverly building to get the camera. Unfortunately mother nature decided to make it rain so we had to change our day and decided to record the day after.

One Shot “Lighting Interview”

Week two of the one shot assignment. Well the first day with Chris Cook we watched an amazing 90 minute long film (I swear it wasn’t boring). The second day With Deborah Tuck we was set a task to go and film an interview. Each group had a different theme to do. Our group had to use a studio and using three light we had to make it look like we was recording in daylight.

I found this task quite difficult to do as I had never used lights before and making a dull room look bright like the sun is shining in is hard to do especially with only three lights.

Originally I was going to be the one in the interview but I got very camera shy and swapped places with Joe. With a little help from Deborah we managed to adjust our white balance and iris so that we could place our lights in a good spot so that it wasn’t blinding the interviewee.

Was we successful.. No I don’t think we wasn’t, I think our final clip looked duller than our first attempt. But again we had fun and we learned a bit about lighting, I think we just need more experience or more lights..

One Shot “You Decide”

In our first day of our One Shot assignment we were put into groups. The people in my group are: Rebecca Bramwell, Oliver Benns, Samuel Dobson, Joe Byrne and Harry Cook. When we were in our group we all introduced ourselves and exchanged numbers.

For the first task of our One Shot assignment we were asked to create a piece of work called “You decide”. For this we had two choices for location the arboretum or the graveyard. We were given a little time to have a look around both and decide which one we wanted to choose. We only went in the graveyard and decided to stick with it as our location. In our group we all decided to go home and do some revision and meet up the day after at 12pm with the ideas we came up with. Just before we left we had a conversation about ideas and Harry came up with an idea of placing the camera on the ground and having everyone running away from the camera with one person walking towards it then running away like there was something scary behind the camera.

We met up around twelve the day after to discuss our ideas. In the end we all decided to stick with Harry’s idea as it was the best one. When our lesson began we had to create a risk assessment and once Deborah had approved it we was given the equipment and was aloud to go and film. When we got to the grave yard we saw another group who had just finished recording so we asked them to be our extras. We set up or camera and recorded our video and then went back to room 207 to upload it onto premier.

Overall I am happy with our first attempt. None of us had actually done much recording before and only having one shot is quite difficult but it went well and we all had fun and enjoyed ourselves. I think I have a good group who all take part and are full of ideas.

My Station Ident

Here’s my 300 word rationale.. I will upload my Station Ident later as I’m just adding some final adjustments.

For the Design Practice 1 brief I have been asked to create a Station Ident that represents me. For this assignment I thought it would be best to gather ideas from some of my favourite channels because if I had my own Station I would more than likely broadcast similar shows. I researched a few Idents and then chose a few ideas that stood out to me and put them together.

I wanted my Station Ident to have a maximum impact to enable me to engage with my target audience.  I feel that the black and white imagery in the ITV Central Ident was used to great effect so I deliberately chose to use black and white. I also chose to use plain, large text to amplify the effect and make it more distinct. I used extrude to thicken my text and give it more definition.

Visually I like the effectiveness of the fireworks on the opening of the X Factor which generates a sense of excitement and draws people in,  so that gave me the idea to use a bang or an explosion at the end of my Ident.

I decided to make the large letters rotate and because I wanted an explosion at the end I added a detonator. The rotating letters slowly lower the detonator giving a sense of expectation.

One of my major influences was a few of the Channel 4 Station Idents. Which features separate shapes that come together to form a whole number four. I turned the concept on its head and instead I started off with whole letters which explode and turn into smaller shapes.

The detonator features a danger sign, warning explosive materials. I added this to intrigue the audience – Why is it there? What is going to explode? This is the ploy I used to keep them watching until the end.

Here are the videos I watched to get some inspiration. The first video shows the fireworks on the X Factor.

Station Ident..

Well this week has been mental.

Long days doing nothing but my station ident, Getting up at 7.30 and going to bed at 3 and for what my silly self to sit on my memory stick and lose everything.. So I gave up and had a lie in, came into Uni and started again. I have been drifting around the Waverly Building for two days now in and out of Room 105 and 207b trying to squeeze in with other classes. Finally I have finished my ident and im just  rendering it and then adding it to Premier so hopefully it should be all ready for tomorrow.

I hope Simon Perkins reads this and notices I have taken his advice and changed all my I’s to capitals. :) thanks.

Ident Idea

Well this was supposed to be an example of my station ident text but it is refusing to upload properly to youtube :/ grrr..

This link will lead you to the ident idea:

Last week I drew a few rough designs for my station ident but thats about all the work I done.. I read my assignment briefs and researched the four design processors for jools’ seminar..
